Free Camping Near Carlsbad, NM

Goat Corral Canyon is the name of the small canyon that runs just above the dirt road winding through BLM Land. The road itself has no name. There is a previously-used campsite right where this road intersects with US-62, then there are further sites as the road ascends elevation from there.

Camping at Goat Corral Canyon

You shouldn’t have too much of a problem driving up this road with 2WD, though it can be bumpy and rocky. The road is firm enough for any vehicle, and you can tow a trailer or drive a motorhome on it, though it’ll get shook up. This road is primarily used by trucks serving the oil pumping stations.

The winds tend to blow fairly strong the higher up in elevation you get. It’s not recommended for tents, though people often pitch tents up there. BLM officials do patrol along this road, but in our experience they don’t seem to mind campers.

Despite the rough road, this area is still a popular boondocking option for campers seeking a place to set up close to Carlsbad Caverns. You’d best get here before 5:00pm because by that time most of the free camping options down here get filled up.
