Free Camping near Sedona, AZ

Pumphouse Wash is a free primitive campground established by Coconino National Forest for campers who want to stay close to Sedona and Flagstaff. It sits on State Highway 89A, and offers dozens of campsites large and small to accommodate just about sized vehicle. The campground is divided up into four “loops”. You are required to camp in of these four loops, and each loop has numbered sites. You are also required to camp in a numbered site. There are no reservations, it’s first come, first serve.

When Does it Open: The campground is seasonal, generally opening up around May after the roads dry out, and closing after the first snow fall.

Crowdedness: During the warmer part of the year, the campground will fill up quickly. It’s best to arrive during the week, sometime before 5:00pm to find an open site.

Road Conditions: The campground is accessed by Forest Road 237, which is hard-packed dirt & gravel, but suitable for any vehicle. The road can get bumpy in places. The loop roads are more bumpy, but still doable by any vehicle.

Trash: Trash is a big problem at Pumphouse Wash Campground due to heavy usage. You should expect to find trash laying around.

Cellular Signal Strength: Verizon & AT&T come in average to good, but T-Mobile barely comes in.
