Do You Still Have to Pay $20.00 to Park at an Ohio Turnpike Service Plaza if You Don’t Use the Hookups?

This was question was asked by one of our readers today. Ohio’s turnpike system has seven “service plazas” (14 if you count each direction). Four of these service plazas feature overnight RV parks. Learn more about these RV parks at Ohio Turnpike’s official website.

These RV parks offer spaces long enough for 40 foot rigs, with electrical and water hookups, and a separate dump station, for a price of $20.00, limited to one night…

If you park in the RV section and you don’t use the hookups (power water) at Ohio Rest Areas do you still have to pay the $20.00?

The answer is yes, you still have to pay.

The reason is because a parking permit is required in order to use the RV park, and the parking permit costs $20.00. Thus even if you choose not to use the hookups, you still have to purchase the parking permit to stay in the RV park. (see photo of blue sign)

It’s similar to going to a movie theater, you still have to pay the full ticket price even if you choose not to use the restrooms.

What if You’re Just Using the Dump Station?

If you enter the RV park solely to use the dump station, and not occupy a parking space, then you don’t have to purchase a parking permit. This has not been clarified by the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, it’s just our interpretation of what a “parking permit” means.

What if You’re Not Staying Overnight?

If you’re going to occupy a parking space, even if it’s just for a couple of hours during the day, you are still required to purchase a parking permit. The parking permit is specifically to occupy a parking space.
