This LBJ National Grasslands camping map was compiled based on our visit to the grasslands in November of 2023. We scoped out every boondocking site as well as noted the locations of paid campgrounds. We also noted which gates were kept locked and which dispersed camping areas were blocked off.

LBJ National Grasslands Camping Rules
The LBJ National Grasslands is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. Rules for camping at the grasslands is not much different than most other grasslands and forests administered by the USFS…
- There is a maximum 14-day stay within any 30-day period.
- Camping is not allowed within 300 feet of a boat ramp or parking lot.
- Gasoline powered generators may not be operated between 10:00pm and 6:00am.

What’s it Like to Boondock at LBJ National Grasslands
During the colder part of the year, there are very few people who visit the grasslands. Most all of the boondocking sites and campground sites are open. But during the summer and fall, the grasslands is a popular recreation area primarily for horseback riders and hunters.
Access Road – make sure to enter LBJ National Grasslands from the yellow map marker depicted in the map above, and follow the yellow route line. This route is mostly paved until you reach the Grassland’s boundaries. After that it becomes hard pack dirt and gravel, suitable for any vehicle.
Wildlife – the grasslands has a large population of white-tailed deer. You may also find bobcat and raccoons.
Trails – There are nearly 75 miles of multipurpose trails which run in the Cottonwood Lake vicinity. These trails are used by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. TADRA Point is a designated trailhead camping facility that is a primary access point for the 75 mile LBJ Multiuse Trail system. Restrooms and parking facilities are provided.
