Camping on Old AZ 64
There are handful of previously-used campsites along Old AZ 64, but several more along Forest Road 6104. Old AZ 64 has a closed gate about a mile south from where it branches off from current Highway 64.
Road conditions through here is rutted and bumpy than in the forest closer to Tusayan Village, but firm packed and suitable for any vehicle. Forest Road 6104 is more soft and better for 4WD vehicles only.
In our experience, camping here is quiet and peaceful at night once traffic along Highway 64 dies down. You get a great view of the night sky due to the trees here being shorter, although less shade overall.
