Camping on Forest Road 688

Once you get at least one mile down Forest Road 688, you will be 11.5 miles (21 minutes) from the South Rim View Point at Grand Canyon Village. The road runs for 4.8 miles east from Highway 64, ending near McRae Tank. The last 3.8 miles of that road offers dozens of previously-used campsites.

The map pin depicted in the map above marks the first campsite beyond that first mile.

The road conditions are firm packed dirt, suitable for any vehicle as long as you remain on the road and in previously-used campsites. You are not allowed stray more than 30 feet from the side of the road.

Deer and elk are plentiful in this area, and you are very likely to see them. There are also wild horses roaming through here. If you arrive here during mid-week, from Monday to Thursday, you’ll find plenty of places to camp, and it generally gets quiet here. During the weekends, in the summer, this place gets packed.
