Camping at Lower Hondo Campground

One of a series of small campgrounds on Highway 150 en route to Taos Ski Valley. The campground provides immediate access to fishing on the Rio Hondo and is near hiking trails in the Columbine-Hondo and Wheeler Peak wilderness areas.

This campground is generally only open from April to December each year depending on weather.

It’s gets full quickly during the open season due to fishing along the Rio Hondo. Small to medium-sized trailers can get into these campsites, but can be difficult to turn around if all sites are taken. Best to find wide shoulder along State Highway 150 and park there first to scout the campground.

Being this campground is closer to the cities of Arroyo Hondo and Taos, it tends to be used by transients working summer jobs.
