Free Camping Near Mimbres, NM

This is a developed campground offered for free by Gila National Forest. There are only two picnic tables here, though that doesn't mean it's limited to just two sets of campers. Still, it's a small campground, though it offers a lot of peace and quiet due to being located far away from town.

Camping at Black Canyon Campground – Upper

Located in a remote area of the forest approximately 30 miles from the Wilderness Ranger District office. This campground is accessible from Forest Road 150 (North Star Road). The upper campground is the first camping area you will come across and is visible from the entrance road.

A high-clearance vehicle is recommended coming up here due to a rocky, bumpy road that can get muddy in places during rains. 4WD is not necessarily required, except during rainy weather. You could perhaps tow a trailer up here as long as it is small, and designed for off-road use.

There are no trash cans at Black Canyon Campground – Upper, you must pack out all your trash.
